Mormons: Are you taught that water baptism is essential for salvation?
Water baptism isn't necessary for one to receive salvation as most Protestants define salvation, but it is necessary for exaltation which is something more. Jesus taught that in his father's house were many mansions - a place for almost everyone. He also taught that the righteous would receive a higher glory. To live in the highest glory, requires one to be baptized, and thus take upon them the name of Christ, and commit to keeping the commandments of God. Baptism cleanses the soul and prepares it for the sanctification of the Holy Ghost. It is the Holy Ghost which changes our nature and refines us, and allows us to withstand the glory of God.
